Around 1700, most of the people living in villages were farmers or daylabourers. So were the Lanners who lived on the Holzthum farm of the owner of the Schuttbourg castle.

As time went on, support trades developed, like the wheelwright and the horseshoe smith, the mason and the carpenter, the shoemaker and the tailor, or the miller. These trades have often been practiced in families over generations. Two chapters dealing with the tailor and the miller business in Lanners families illustrate this tradition.
